Glossary
- Rated resistance: Designed resistance value usually indicated on the resistor.
- Rated Ambient Temperature: Maximum ambient temperature at which the power rating may be applied continuously. Refers to the temperature around the resistor inside equipment.
- Rated power: Maximum power allowed at 70 ambient temperature during durability test, without exceeding specified resistance change.
- Derating curve: Used to determine rated power when ambient temperature exceeds 70.
- Rated Voltage: Maximum D.C. or A.C. voltage (rms) continuously applied under rated ambient or terminal temperature. Calculated from rated power and nominal resistance. Shall not exceed maximum working voltage.
- Critical Resistance: Maximum nominal resistance value allowing rated power application without exceeding maximum working voltage.
- Maximum Working Voltage: Maximum D.C. or A.C. voltage (rms) continuously applied to the terminations.
- Allowable voltage: Voltage applied for 5 seconds during short-time overload test, typically 2.5 times rated voltage or maximum overload voltage, whichever is lower.
Precautions for Use
- For high resistance values (hundreds of K ohm), the thin Ni-Cr alloy film may reduce reliability, especially in high humidity environments. Consider alternative resistor types for high-reliability designs.
- For ultra-high resistance values, consider MG High Voltage Surge Resistors or CHIP resistors.
- For low and ultra-low resistance values where temperature coefficient or current capability is critical, consider KN Wire Wound Resistors.
- Precision metal film resistors have thinner films compared to other thin-film types, making them less resistant to pulses. Avoid using high resistance values in high-pulse or continuous pulse circuits.
- The conductive composition is prone to oxidation at high temperatures. Ensure adequate heat dissipation and avoid using glues for fixing or potting on the resistor surface, as they can impede heat dissipation and potentially cause electrochemical reactions leading to failure.
