Glossary
Rated resistance: Designed resistance value usually indicated on the resistor.
Rated Ambient Temperature: Maximum ambient temperature at which the power rating may be applied continuously. The rated ambient temperature refers to the temperature around the resistor mounted inside the equipment, not to the air temperature outside the equipment.
Rated power: At 70 ambient temperature durability test, and the change in resistance does not exceed the value of the test allows the maximum power allowed.
Derating curve: Rated power is maximum power which can be continuously loaded at specified ambient temperature 70 , however when Rated Ambient Temperature exceeds 70, rated power should be determined form the derating curve.
Rated Voltage: Maximum allowable D.C. or A.C. voltage(rms), capable to be continuously applied to a resistor or a resistor element under the rated ambient temperature or terminal part temperature. It shall be calculated from the rated power and nominal resistance using the following formula. The rated voltage shall not exceed the max. working voltage.
Critical Resistance: The maximum nominal resistance value at which the rated power can be applied without exceeding the maximum working voltage. The rated voltage is equal to the max. working voltage at the critical resistance value.
Maximum Working Voltage: Maximum D.C. or A.C. voltage(rms) that can be continuously applied to the terminations of a resistor. However, the maximum value of the applicable voltage is the rated voltage at the critical resistance value or lower.
Allowable voltage: which is applied in 5 sec. under short time overload test. Overload voltage shall be 2.5 times of rated voltage or max. overload voltage, whichever is lower.
Precautions for Use
For high resistance values (hundreds of K ohms), the film layer is very thin, which can lead to reduced reliability, especially in high humidity environments. For high reliability applications, avoid using ultra-high resistance values. Consider using MG High Voltage Surge Resistors or Chip Resistors for ultra-high resistance needs.
For low and ultra-low resistance values where temperature coefficient or current capability is critical, consider KN Wire Wound Resistors for their superior temperature coefficient and pulse resistance.
Precision metal film resistors have a thinner film layer compared to other thin-film resistors of the same size and resistance, resulting in lower pulse resistance. Avoid using high resistance products in circuits with high or continuous pulse applications.
The conductive composition of precision metal film resistors is prone to oxidation at high temperatures. For high-power applications, pay attention to surface temperature rise and surrounding heat dissipation. Do not use adhesives for fixing or potting on the resistor surface, as they can impair heat dissipation and potentially cause electrochemical reactions leading to failure.
