Application Guidelines

Circuit Design: Electrical parameters vary with temperature and frequency. Consider effects on leakage current, capacitance, and ESR. Avoid misapplication conditions such as reverse voltage, over voltage, and excessive ripple current. For series/parallel connections, consider voltage and current balancing.

Capacitor Mounting: Ensure proper hole spacing, avoid solder bridging, and allow clearance for pressure relief vents. Avoid high voltage/current wiring near vents. Ensure circuit board patterns are not under the capacitor. For screw terminal types, tighten within specified torque range.

Electrical Isolation: Ensure complete isolation between cathode and case, anode terminal and other paths, and extra mounting terminals.

Capacitor Sleeve: The vinyl sleeve is for identification and not for electrical insulation. It may be damaged by solvents like toluene or xylene at high temperatures.

Safety Precautions: Plan for worst-case failure modes (short/open circuits). Provide protection circuits and consider redundant circuits.

Capacitor Handling Techniques

Before Using: Capacitors have finite life; do not reuse from used equipment. Discharge transient recovery voltage if needed. Recondition capacitors stored for long periods by applying rated voltage with a current-limiting resistor. Avoid using dropped, dented, or crushed capacitors.

Capacitor Insertion: Verify capacitance, rated voltage, and polarity. Ensure correct hole spacing to avoid terminal stress. Prevent auto-insertion equipment from stressing leads at the seal.

Soldering: Observe temperature and time specifications (e.g., max 400C for 3 seconds). Avoid stress on leads where they enter the seal. Do not touch the capacitor body with a soldering iron. For flow soldering, do not immerse the capacitor body. Avoid other components touching the capacitor during soldering. Avoid rapid temperature rises during preheat/resin bonding.

After Solder: Avoid moving the capacitor after soldering. Do not use the capacitor as a handle. Avoid striking the capacitor after assembly.

Circuit Board Cleaning: Use suitable solvents (max 60C, 5 min). Rinse and dry thoroughly. Avoid halogenated, alkali, petroleum-based solvents, xylene, acetone, and 1-1-1 trichloroethane unless specified. Monitor contamination levels.

Mounting Adhesives/Coating: Avoid materials with halogenated solvents and chloroprene-based polymers. Dry thoroughly.

Precautions for Using Capacitors

Environmental Conditions: Avoid temperatures outside the rated range, direct contact with water/salt water/oil, high humidity, toxic gases (HS, HSO, HNO, Cl, NH), ozone, radiation, UV rays, and excessive vibration/shock.

Electrical Precautions: Avoid touching terminals due to electric shock risk. Do not short terminals with conductive materials or liquids.

Emergency Procedures

If the pressure relief vent operates, immediately turn off equipment and disconnect power. Avoid contact with escaping electrolyte gas (can exceed 100C). Flush eyes with water if electrolyte/gas enters. Gargle with water if ingested. Wash skin with soap and water if contact occurs.

Long Term Storage

Leakage current increases with long storage. Recondition capacitors stored for over one year by applying rated voltage in series with a 1000 current-limiting resistor for 30 minutes. Products with date codes over eighteen months should be returned for confirmation.

Capacitor Disposal

Incinerate after crushing or puncturing to prevent explosion. Incinerate at high temperatures to prevent toxic gas release. Dispose of as solid waste, adhering to local laws.
