Guidelines For Using Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor

  1. Polarity: DC electrolytic capacitors are polarized. Ensure correct polarity to prevent short circuits or damage. Not for AC applications.
  2. Bipolar Capacitors: Suitable for pulse and polarity reverse circuits, not for pure AC or high ripple current.
  3. Operating Voltage: Do not exceed rated voltage. Recommended working voltage is 70-80% of rated voltage for extended life.
  4. Ripple Current: Do not exceed permissible ripple current to prevent overheating, capacitance reduction, and damage. Generally not more than 80% of rated current.
  5. Charge/Discharge Circuits: Use specially designed capacitors for circuits with frequent charge/discharge cycles.
  6. Operating Temperature: Characteristics vary with temperature. Lower temperatures generally ensure longer life.
  7. Temperature and Life Relationship: Life is approximately doubled for every 10C reduction in operating temperature.
  8. Operating Frequency: Capacitance decreases and dissipation factor increases with higher frequencies.
  9. Long-term Storage: Capacitors stored for extended periods may have increased leakage current and reduced voltage withstand. Apply rated DC voltage gradually before use.
  10. Case Insulation: The capacitor case is not insulated from the cathode terminal. Insulation measures are required at the mounting point if case insulation is necessary.
  11. Terminal Force: Do not apply excessive force to terminals or leads to prevent breakage or internal damage.
  12. Circuit Board Cleaning: Use recommended solvents (methanol, isopropanol, etc.). Avoid halogenated solvents.
  13. Soldering: Maintain distance from the plastic sleeve. Recommended solder bath temperature is within 260C for no more than 10 seconds.
  14. Hole Layout: Ensure mounting hole spacing matches lead spacing on PCBs to avoid stress on leads. Consider solder splashing.
