Guidelines For Using Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
- Polarity: DC electrolytic capacitors are polarized. Ensure correct polarity to avoid damage. Not for AC application.
- Bipolar Capacitors: For pulse circuits and polarity reverse circuits only; not for pure AC or high ripple current.
- Operating Voltage: Do not exceed rated voltage. Recommended working voltage is 70-80% of rated voltage for extended life.
- Ripple Current: Do not exceed permissible ripple current to prevent overheating and damage. Generally not more than 80% of rated current.
- Fast Charge/Discharge: Use specially designed capacitors for circuits with frequent charge/discharge cycles.
- Operating Temperature: Characteristics vary with temperature. Lower temperatures ensure longer life.
- Temperature and Life: Life is approximately doubled for every 10 decrease in operating temperature.
- Operating Frequency: Capacitance decreases and tg increases with frequency.
