Guidelines for Using Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

To ensure optimal performance and extend the lifespan of aluminum electrolytic capacitors, please read the following guidelines before use.

  • Polarity: DC electrolytic capacitors are polarized. Ensure correct polarity to avoid short circuits or damage. Use bipolar capacitors when polarity is uncertain. DC electrolytic capacitors are not suitable for AC applications.
  • Bipolar Capacitors: Suitable for pulse and polarity-reversing circuits, but not for pure AC or high ripple current applications.
  • Voltage: Do not exceed the rated voltage. Recommended working voltage is 70-80% of rated voltage for extended life.
  • Ripple Current: Do not exceed the permissible ripple current to prevent overheating, capacitance reduction, and damage. Generally, ripple current should not exceed 80% of the rated current.
  • Fast Charge/Discharge: Use specially designed capacitors for circuits with frequent charge and discharge cycles to prevent damage and premature failure.
  • Operating Temperature: Capacitor characteristics vary with temperature. Lower temperatures generally ensure longer life.
  • Temperature and Life: Capacitor life is related to operating temperature. A 10C reduction in temperature can double the lifespan at rated temperature.
  • Operating Frequency: Capacitance decreases and dissipation factor (tg) increases with rising frequency.
  • Long-Term Storage: Capacitors stored for extended periods may exhibit increased leakage current and reduced voltage withstand. Apply rated DC voltage gradually before use after long storage.
  • Case Insulation: The capacitor case is not insulated from the cathode terminal. Ensure insulation at the mounting point if case insulation is required.
  • Terminal Force: Do not apply excessive force to terminals or leads to prevent breakage, separation, or internal connection failure.
  • Circuit Board Cleaning: Avoid halogenated solvents (e.g., trichloroethylene, xylene, acetone) for cleaning. Recommended solvents include methanol, isopropanol, ethanol, isobutanol, petroleum ether, propanol, and general detergents.
  • Soldering: Maintain a distance from the plastic sleeve. Recommended solder bath temperature is within 260C for no more than 10 seconds to avoid damage.
  • Hole Layout: Ensure mounting hole spacing on PCBs matches lead spacing to prevent stress on leads and potential failures. Consider hole layout carefully to prevent solder splashing.
