Guidelines For Using Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

  1. Polarity: DC electrolytic capacitors are polarized. Ensure correct polarity to avoid damage. Not for AC applications.
  2. Bipolar Capacitors: For pulse and polarity reverse circuits only; not for pure AC or high ripple current.
  3. Voltage: Do not apply voltage greater than rated voltage. Recommended working voltage is 70-80% of rated voltage.
  4. Ripple Current: Do not allow excessive ripple current. Generally not more than 80% of rated current.
  5. Rapid Charge/Discharge: Use specially designed capacitors for circuits with frequent charge/discharge cycles.
  6. Operating Temperature: Characteristics change with temperature. Lower temperatures ensure longer life.
  7. Temperature and Life: Life is related to temperature. Reducing temperature by 10C can double the life.
  8. Operating Frequency: Capacitance decreases and tg increases with higher frequencies.
  9. Long Storage: Apply rated DC voltage treatment before use for capacitors stored for a long time to restore leakage current and withstand voltage.
  10. Case Insulation: Capacitor case is not insulated from the cathode terminal. Insulation measures required if case needs to be insulated.
  11. Terminal Force: Do not apply excessive force to terminals and leads to prevent breakage or internal connection failure.
  12. Circuit Board Cleaning: Use recommended cleaning solvents (e.g., methanol, isopropanol). Avoid halogenated solvents.
  13. Soldering: Maintain distance from plastic sleeve. Solder bath temperature within 260C and duration not exceeding 10 seconds.
  14. Hole Layout: Ensure hole spacing on PCBs matches lead spacing to avoid stress on leads. Consider solder splashing.
