Guidelines for Using Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

To ensure optimal performance and extended lifespan, please adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Polarity: DC electrolytic capacitors are polarized. Ensure correct polarity is observed. Reversed voltage can cause short circuits or damage. Use bipolar capacitors if polarity is uncertain. DC electrolytic capacitors are not for AC applications.
  • Bipolar Capacitors: Suitable for pulse and polarity-reversing circuits, but not for pure AC or high ripple current applications.
  • Operating Voltage: Do not exceed the rated voltage. Recommended working voltage is 70-80% of rated voltage for extended life.
  • Ripple Current: Avoid excessive ripple current, which causes heating, capacitance reduction, and damage. Generally, do not exceed 80% of the rated ripple current.
  • Fast Charge/Discharge Circuits: Use specially designed capacitors for circuits with frequent charge/discharge cycles to prevent damage and premature failure.
  • Operating Temperature: Capacitor characteristics vary with temperature. Lower temperatures generally ensure longer life.
  • Temperature and Life Relationship: Capacitor life is related to operating temperature. Generally, a 10C reduction in temperature doubles the lifespan at rated temperature.
  • Operating Frequency: Capacitance decreases and dissipation factor (tg) increases with higher frequencies.
  • Long-Term Storage: Capacitors stored for extended periods may exhibit increased leakage current and reduced voltage withstand. Apply rated DC voltage gradually before use.
  • Case Insulation: The capacitor case is not insulated from the cathode terminal. Implement insulation measures at the mounting point if case insulation is required.
  • Terminal Force: Do not apply excessive force to terminals or leads to prevent breakage, separation, or internal connection failure.
  • Circuit Board Cleaning: Use recommended cleaning solvents (e.g., methanol, isopropanol) and avoid halogenated solvents to protect the capacitor's sleeve, marking, and sealing.
  • Soldering: Maintain a distance from the insulating sleeve. For solder bath dipping, recommended temperature is within 260C for no more than 10 seconds.
  • Hole Layout: Ensure printed circuit board hole spacing matches lead spacing to avoid stress on leads and potential damage. Consider solder splashing during design.
