PolarityDC electrolytic capacitors are polarized. Polarity is marked on the capacitor body. Use bipolar capacitors when polarity is not determined or unknown. DC electrolytic capacitors cannot be used for AC applications.
Bipolar Capacitors UsageSuitable for pulse circuits and polarity reverse circuits; not applicable in pure AC or high ripple current circuits.
Voltage ApplicationDo not apply voltage greater than rated voltage. Recommended working voltage is 70-80% of rated voltage for extended life.
Ripple CurrentRipple current should not exceed the allowable limit, generally not more than 80% of the rated current. Excessive ripple current can cause heating, capacitance reduction, and damage.
Charge/Discharge CircuitsFor circuits with rapid charge and discharge cycles, use specially designed capacitors to prevent damage, capacitance decrease, and heat rise.
Operating TemperatureCapacitor characteristics vary with temperature. Lower temperatures generally ensure longer life.
Temperature and Life RelationshipLife is generally doubled for every 10C decrease in operating temperature from the rated temperature. Formula provided for calculation.
Operating FrequencyCapacitance is typically measured at 100Hz or 120Hz. Capacitance decreases and tg increases with higher frequencies, leading to increased ambient temperature.
Storage HandlingFor capacitors stored for a long time, gradually apply DC voltage up to the rated voltage before use to address potential increases in leakage current and reduced withstand voltage.
Case InsulationThe capacitor case is not insulated from the cathode terminal. Insulation measures are required at the mounting point if case insulation is necessary.
Terminal/Lead ForceDo not apply excessive force to terminals and leads to prevent breakage, separation, or internal connection failure.
Bending LeadsWhen bending leads for horizontal mounting, maintain a 2mm safe spacing from the capacitor body to avoid internal structural damage.
Circuit Board CleaningUse recommended solvents (Methanol, isopropanol, ethanol, isobutanol, petroleum ether, propanol, commercial detergents) for cleaning. Avoid halogenated solvents (trichlorethylene, xylene, acetone) to protect the sleeve, marking, and sealing materials.
SolderingMaintain distance from plastic sleeves. Recommended solder bath temperature is within 260C for no more than 10 seconds to prevent damage.
Hole Layout on PCBEnsure hole spacing on the circuit board matches lead spacing to avoid stress on leads. Consider hole layout carefully to prevent solder splashing onto the capacitor sleeve.
