General Technical Information

Construction: Electrolytic capacitors consist of two conductive electrodes (anode and cathode) separated by an insulating layer. The anode foil's surface area is enlarged, and an oxide membrane (Al2O3) acts as the insulating layer. The cathode electrode uses a conductive liquid electrolyte, with the cathode foil facilitating current flow to it.

Equivalent Circuit: The equivalent circuit includes resistances for terminals, electrodes, anode oxide layer, and insulation resistance, along with semiconductor oxide and inductance components.

Electrical Parameters:

  • Voltage: Rated voltage (continuous DC/peak AC), Operating voltage (continuous DC with superimposed AC), Surge voltage (short-term maximum), and Recovery voltage (post-discharge voltage).
  • Capacitance: AC/DC capacitance, Rated capacitance, Tolerance (typically 20%, with 10% available), and Temperature/Frequency Characteristics (capacitance varies with temperature and frequency).
  • Dissipation Factor (Tan ) / ESR: Ratio of ESR to capacitive reactance; increases with frequency and decreases with temperature.
  • Equivalent Series Inductance (ESL): Affective by frequency.
  • Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR): Represents capacitor losses, decreases with temperature and increases with frequency at low frequencies.
  • Impedance (Z): Opposes AC flow, related to capacitance, inductance, and ESR. Minimum impedance at resonant frequency.
  • Leakage Current (LC): Small current flowing through the oxide membrane when DC voltage is applied; increases with temperature and time.

Ripple Current: The maximum allowable ripple current depends on ambient temperature, capacitor surface area, dissipation factor (tan/ESR), and frequency. RMS ripple current calculation considers self-heating from combined frequencies.

Useful Life: Defined by operating experience and aging tests. Can be extended by operating below rated values. Load conditions include Rated Voltage, Rated Ripple Current, and Rated Temperature.

Connection: Capacitors can be connected in parallel (requiring balancing resistors for voltage distribution) or series.

Climatic Conditions: Capacitors have minimum/maximum operating temperatures. Storage temperature affects useful life and reliability; recommended storage is 5C to 35C. Capacitors have a valid storage date of 1 year.

Maintenance: Regular inspection is recommended for screw capacitors. Ensure power is off and capacitors are discharged before inspection.

Mounting: Ensure correct rated capacitance, voltage, and polarity. Check terminal pitch compatibility. Screw capacitors should not be mounted with the safety vent upside down. Soldering conditions must be within limits to prevent damage. Avoid cleaning agents like halogen-containing solvents and alkaline solvents.

Marking: Screw type marking includes Brand, Rated Capacitance, Rated Voltage, Capacitance, Rated Temperature, Safety Vent, and Series.

Quality and Environment

CapXon adheres to a "QUALITY FIRST" tenet, implementing quality and environment management systems based on IATF 16949:2016 and ISO 14001. They also operate an ISO 50001 Energy Management System and a QC 080000 HSF management system. Products are RoHS-compatible, and halogen-free materials are used in all electrolytic capacitors since June 2009. Disposal, reuse, or recycling of capacitors must comply with national laws.

Precautions & Guidelines

For Conductive Polymer Capacitors (CP-CAP):

  • Prohibited in high-impedance circuits, coupling circuits, time constant circuits, and other circuits significantly affected by leakage current.
  • CP-CAPs are polarized; do not apply reverse or AC voltages.
  • Do not exceed rated voltage. Peak voltage of superimposed AC must not exceed rated voltage.
  • Do not apply currents exceeding the rated ripple current.
  • Do not use at temperatures exceeding the maximum category temperature.
  • Avoid rapid charge/discharge cycles. Use protective circuits for rush currents exceeding 10A or over 10 times the allowable ripple current.
  • Failure modes include contingency (short circuit) and performance characteristic changes.
  • Verify electrical characteristics considering temperature and frequency variations.
  • When connecting capacitors in parallel or series, ensure current/voltage balancing.
  • Do not use/expose capacitors to oil, water, direct sunlight, toxic gases, ozone, or radiation.
  • For surface mount capacitors, design copper pads according to specifications. For radial capacitors, ensure terminal holes match the pitch.
  • Increased leakage current due to soldering or stress will gradually decrease with voltage application.
  • Soldering conditions (temperature, time, flow) must be within recommended limits.
  • Do not use halogenated solvents, alkaline solvents, xylene, or acetone for cleaning.

For Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors:

  • Polarity is crucial; reverse voltage can cause damage. Use bi-polar capacitors if polarity is reversed or unknown.
  • Do not apply continuous overvoltage.
  • Capacitor life depends on temperature; life doubles with each 10C decrease. Use at lower temperatures.
  • Ensure at least 3mm space around the vent for proper operation.
  • Do not apply ripple current exceeding the rated maximum.
  • Frequent/quick charge/discharge generates heat, potentially causing damage. Consult for special requirements.
  • Store capacitors in a cool, dry place (5-35, 75% humidity). Use within 1 year of opening the bag. If stored for over 12 months, apply rated voltage through a protective resistor for 30 minutes.
  • For SMD soldering, avoid excessive temperature/time. Solderability: 2455, 20.5 secs, 95% coverage.
  • Reflow soldering conditions vary by voltage range; consult specifications.
  • Do not apply excessive force to lead wires or terminals.
  • Capacitor sleeve material is PET and not insulating.
  • Products meet JIS-C-5101-1 and reliability requirements refer to JIS-C-5101-4, -18, -25, -26.
  • No ozone-depleting chemicals are used in manufacturing.
  • AEC-Q200 compliance is available upon request for automotive applications.
